The Big Lazy Bee
|
| THE BIG LAZY BEE The Big Lazy Bee is essentially a 150% enlargement of the original Lazy Bee. There are 2 versions: the standard (60" wing), and the extended wing (72" wing). The wing chord (21") and fuselage length (39") are the same for both versions. The flying characteristics also differ. The 72" Big Lazy Bee is slower, glides better, and is more docile. The 72" version is more of a "floater", and it can carry more payload - it's the right choice for an airborne camera. The 60" Big Lazy Bee is more maneuverable and aerobatic. The extended wing 72" version is generally preferred for electric power, and the standard 60" version is better on windy or gusty days. The Big Lazy Bee uses standard size radio gear, although you can use a mini or micro servo for the throttle. The recommended covering is Easytex. It is extremely strong and very easy to use, it doesn't over-shrink - so you don't have to worry about warping the wing, and it sticks to itself without bubbles, so you can follow the trim patterns in the plans. There are two wheel sizes available for the Big Lazy Bee. The standard 4.5" (size 11G) Trexler Balloon Wheels are for normal use, and the new big foot 6" Trexlers (size 12G) are for heavy duty use and abuse. A special heavy duty suspension set with R/C monster truck shocks and springs is available for the Big Lazy Bee for use with the 6" wheels. BIG LAZY BEE KIT This is the enlarged 60" wingspan Lazy Bee. The Big Lazy Bee Kit contains all of the parts needed to build a Big Lazy Bee except for wheels, engine, radio, covering, and some minor hardware. Specifically, the kit includes: pre-cut sheet balsa and plywood parts, balsa sticks and strips, spruce or basswood sticks, extra sheet balsa, carbon fiber tube (for the wing hold down), windows, stainless steel front axle and tail spring, the complete plans (3 pages, rolled) and instructions. The full-wing plans are very detailed and include laminating templates and a set of covering patterns, which will save you a lot of time when you cover your Big Lazy Bee. The instructions include a detailed "shopping list" that lists everything you need to finish the plane. EXTENDED WING BIG LAZY BEE KIT The extended wing was designed to reduce the wing loading of the heavier Big Lazy Bees. The wingspan is increased by 12", from 60" to 72". This adds another 252 sq inches (12" x 21") of wing area (20% increase). Only the center section of the wing is changed. The extended wing is more docile, and it glides better. You get all the parts from the standard Big Lazy Bee Kit plus the additional parts and plans required to build the extended wing: Extended wing plans, additional wing ribs, longer spars, extra sheet balsa for gussets and compression braces, and complete instructions.
